What on earth is pickleball?
Fast becoming one of the most popular racket sports in the world, pickleball brings together the best bits of tennis, badminton and table tennis into a game that suits just about everyone — whatever your age or fitness.
Most people are rallying within ten minutes of picking up a paddle. That’s the whole appeal: it’s genuinely easy to start and surprisingly hard to master.

It's three sports in one
Pickleball takes the best of tennis, badminton and table tennis: a badminton-sized court, a lower net, solid paddles and a plastic ball. Easy to pick up in an hour, hard to put down.
Serves are underarm
Every serve is hit underarm, forehand or backhand. The ball has to bounce once on each side before anyone volleys, which keeps rallies going and levels the playing field.
Stay out of the kitchen
You can't volley from inside the non-volley zone — the 'kitchen' — or on its line. Points are scored by the serving side only, and games go to 11, win by two.
We'll lend you a paddle
Nothing to buy on day one. Bring trainers you can move in (non-marking ones for the indoor courts) and a drink, and we'll sort the rest.
a good year
A club that grew from nothing in a single summer
We started with a handful of curious tennis players and a couple of borrowed nets. One season later there’s a waiting list, a festival behind us and a winter programme booked — and the friendliest crowd in Newbury.

FAQs
Everything people ask us before a first session.
I've never played before — can I still come?+
Absolutely, and most of our players started exactly there. Sessions are mixed-standard and sociable, we run Intro to Pickleball sessions through the year, and there's always someone happy to explain the scoring. Paddles and balls are provided, and your first session is free.
Do I need to book, or can I just turn up?+
Please book. There are 16 places each Sunday and they regularly fill, so turning up on spec risks a wasted trip. Booking is through Eventbrite and takes a minute.
What does it cost?+
Your first session is free. After that it's £6 pay and play, or £48 for the whole 11-week indoor season from 4 October to 13 December — which is effectively three weeks free.
How do I pay for a season pass?+
By bank transfer to Newbury Lawn Tennis Club. Register your interest and we'll email you the account details, along with the reference to use. Please don't send payment to details you've been given anywhere else.
What if I can't make a week I've paid for?+
Pass your spot to a friend, or let Keith know and we'll offer it out as a pay and play place. We can't generally do refunds for individual weeks — but paying up front still works out cheaper even if you miss a couple.
Where exactly do you play?+
It depends on the season. From October to December we're indoors at Trinity School, Love Lane, Shaw, Newbury RG14 2DU, Sundays 10am to 11am. Through the summer we're outdoors at Newbury Tennis Club, Poplar Place, Newbury RG14 1NA.
What should I wear and bring?+
Comfortable clothes, trainers you can move around in — non-marking soles for the indoor sports hall — and a drink. Paddles and balls are provided, so there's no kit to buy before you start.
Where can I buy a paddle of my own?+
Once you're hooked, our friends at Reading Pickleball can sort you out and advise on what suits your game. Their coach came along to our Festival and we're keen to do more together.
Are there sessions on other days?+
Not yet — but that's exactly what we're working on. Sunday ran at around 80% capacity all summer and we'd love to add a second slot. Tell us which day and time would suit you and you'll help make the case for it.
